Introduction of evaluation

My project is a promotional package for a new film, that includes a trailer, a poster for the film and a film magazine front cover (featuring the film).

 My target audiences are girls aged 16 to 19, as my target audience where boys for my AS work, I wanted to do something different. My film targets those who love playing video games and watching films with their friends at sleepovers and eating lots of junk food. They enjoy reading sci-fi and astronomy books as their favourite lesson at school is science. They also enjoy going to the cinema with friends, they mostly watch sci-fi, action and horror films. As they are big sci-fi film fans they will own film merchandise, such as posters t-shirts, key rings ect.. Moreover they will love going on social networks/blogs like Tumblr to talk about there favourite films with others who share the same interests.

My audience will mostly be derive from middle class families with a degree of disposable income coming from either pocket money or a part-time job. This income of money helps them purchase film tickets, video games, books and film merchandise. They wear jeans or shorts with pattern tights and t-shirts, which carry humorous slogans or related to films. Musical tastes may be techno as it reminds them of sci fi.

My products will appeal to them as they enjoy sci-fi films and reading about new upcoming films. I think they will enjoy my film as it's different to most sci-fi films as it has a female lead character and it has elements of horror a lot like the film Alien (which is one of my audiences favourite films and my main inspirations for my film).

Evaluation conclusion

Trailer
I like how I have layered sound in my trailer, I think to music shows the audience what the genre of the film is, with out me have to show shots of aliens to represent sci-fi. It also suggests horror elements to the plot line. I used the different colour tones in my trailer for the same reason and I believe the colour tones made my trailer have really cool cinematic photography, that is lot a different from films. I also think my awards and titles make my film look more professional. I think to improve my trailer I could have used a wider range of shots.

Magazine
I really like the pictures of Holly with alien writing, I think it grabs my audience's attention and stands out form the magazines. I also like my font as it fits really well with my name "Resolution". I think to improve I good add more news stories to try and fill the cover.

Poster
I like my pictures of Holly's eye with broken glass and space inside her eye, I think it shows my audience the genre of the film and codes to the plot. I think to improve my poster I could have blended the eye better into the background of space to make it look more professional. However I do think my logos and credits do make my poster look professional.

Over all I'm really happy with all my products especially my trailer, however I do think my magazine and poster could be a bit better. As had not been on photoshop for some time it did take me time to remember. I think I could have made them look are professional by spending more time on them. I think my trailer looks really professional probably because I spent more time on it than my poster and magazine. Next time I will try to learn more about photoshop and spend equal amounts of time on each products.

Why I didn't used Garage Band

For my AS coursework I made my own soundtrack on Garage Band. I didn't use it this year as I feel it has very limited sounds and none of them really fit with the mood of my trailer (creepy/scary). Garage Band also only has very short sounds that don't work on there own, you have to build sounds on top of each other for it to sound good. This would take a long time that might be wasted if my audience feedback was to suggest to change the soundtrack. I feel Garage Band is useful for making songs and sometimes film soundtracks but not a trailer. Trailer soundtracks have to be epic to draw a audience in I believe that Garage Band will not offer me the sounds I want. So I will be getting my full soundtrack from a website.

Sound effects

From feedback my audience suggested to put sound effects on my trailer as at the moment it only looks like a horror film not a horror and sci-fi.

Research into sci-fi sound effects





After looking at examples of sound effects I have made a list of sounds I want for my trailer, this will help me get all the effects I need quickly. I will be getting the effects from free sounds as they have lost of sounds I can choose from and they are good quality. Hopefully the sound effects will create a more sci-fi atmosphere with hints of horror.

Costume

 As you can see in these film stills, my characters have everyday clothing on. In my research I found that in most sci-fi films, characters normaly have either futuristic  costumes like space suits or everyday clothing. I decided to go with everyday clothes as it fits better with my plot. My film is set in today's world and the main characters are teenagers, so they would not be wearing space suits. Also it will allow my target audience to relate to the characters and care about them.

I had my main character wear glasses in one scene to show my audience that she is clever and possibly a geek. This will attract my audience as they are similar to her. I have also used intertextuality with my costumes as one of my characters is wearing a jumper with a Captain American  logo on it, showing she is a fan on comics/super heros. I have done this as most of my target audience will read comics and this will grab there attention.

My Trailer - I Found Them feedback 2

I got told by my audience that the Tv sound was off and the clip where three characters turn to a sound was too quick, so I will change these things.

Trailer feedback

I put voice overs on this trailer and my audience said they think I should only have "I Found Them" at the end and get rid of the others. They felt it gave too much away and the quality of some was not good.



My audience told me they thought the music was iconic to the film donnie darko and made think think of that film. I did not want this as it takes my audience's attention away from my film, so I will change the music.
